Cuberant Lakes Trail

Overview: A great hike through the Western High Uintas with breathtaking views of Reid's Peak, Bald Mountain, and Mount Marsell as well as great fishing. One of my Favorites!

  • Trail Head: Take I-15 to the 8th North Orem exit and head East and merge onto HWY 189. Take 189 to Heber and Turn North on to HWY 40. About 5 miles out of town, take a right on the Kamas HWY (State Road 32). Once you get to Francis, turn left on State Road 32 (main intersection in Francis) until you get to Kamas. In Kamas, turn right on Main Street which will turn into State Road 150 (Mirror Lake HWY). Follow this for 32 miles past Mirror Lake and Pass Lake. Immediately past the curve on Pass Lake there is a turn off on the left to the Trailhead. The trailhead has a nice
    • Coordinates: 40˚42'07.38" N 110˚53'34.49" W
  • Distance: 2.5 Miles (to the Main Lake)
  • Difficulty: 3
  • Trail Condition: This dirt trail is well maintained by the Forest Service. There are bridges over the marshier and wet places.
  • Season: Lower Canyon - Summer through Fall.
  • Fees: $6 fee for 3 days, $12 for 7 days, $45 for year pass. There are free use weekends periodically so check with the Forest Service.

Detailed Description: The Cuberant Lakes are a grouping of 7 lakes at the base of Mount Marsell. The Trail starts out at an elevation of 10,154 feet and the highpoint is 10,426 at the Main Cuberant lake but you will have a climb as you go over a pass. The Hike is separated into two different sections: 1. Forest and Meadows and 2. Pass and Lakes.

  • Forest and Meadows: The trailhead starts out by following the Lofty Lake Trailhead as you start out going through pines and a few hills. There are a number of small to large meadows (the largest is Reid's Meadow). This part of the trail is very pleasant with small rolling topography and very scenic. It is a great leisurely stroll through a very picturesque part of the high Uinta Mountains. The two most striking peaks along the trail are to your left, Reid's Peak in the foreground and Bald Mountain in the back. Keep your eye on these as you will get some spectacular views along this trail. This section of the hike will be about 1.75 miles to the pass.

  • The pass itself will climb about 200 feet. On the way up you will go over a small rock scramble or two but nothing two technical. As your rise you will get some awesome photo ops of the surrounding peaks. Before you know it you will be on top of the pass looking across the lower Cuberant basin. As you come down you will see a grassy dry lake bed the trail will split here; the left trail will take you to the two lower Cuberant lakes and the right will take you to the Main Cuberant lake which is a bit more of a climb. You will start climbing again and come to another lake, but is not the main lake yet. Follow the trail along the right side of the lake and you will climb some more over another small ridge. At the summit of this ridge you will see the Main lake and see the size difference between this lake and the others.

Additional information: The first basin you drop into is the headwaters of the Weber River. Some of these lakes are deeper than others making some better for fly fishing and others better for lures. Later in the fall, these lakes are surrounded by elderberries which are great tasting for both human and fish. There has also been a Bigfoot sighting in this area so tread lightly.
